1.HOW ARE PRAWNS RAISED?
In small ponds, usually two acres or less.
The ponds are on average four feet deep and are sloped to the center and to a drain for harvest.
2.
WHAT IS THE GROWING SEASON?
Juveniles are stocked when the water temperature is 70 degrees and rising.
Prawns must be harvested before the temp drops below 57-60 degrees Farenheit. Depending on the region, stocking is May 15-June
15, and harvest is September 15-October 15.
3. WHERE DO I PURCHASE PL'S OR JUVENILES?
Lauren Farms provides quality PL and juvenile prawns. We will guide you in stocking rates based on the size prawn
you wish to grow.
4. HOW DO I CARE FOR THE PRAWNS?
The pond needs to
be filled approximately one month before stocking. Feed is a sinking catfish pellet. An aerator is necessary to maintain oxygen
levels. An oxygen meter is used to read levels. A water quality kit should be purchased to test various water quality parameters.
5. WHERE DO I SELL PRAWNS?
Your market should be your first consideration!
Most farmers sell their product in niche markets. Pond bank sales, festivals and advertised sales are most common. Frozen
product sales must meet certain government regulations.
6. WILL A LICENSE BE NECESSARY?
Most states require a license to raise a non-native species.
7. WHO WILL HELP ME
ESTABLISH MY PRAWN VENTURE?
Your local extension agent or university may be able to assist you. As
a customer of Lauren Farms, we will be glad to guide you in all phases of production.
